When 2nd XI captain Jamie Breakwell drove the ball past mid off for four against Prescot & Odyssey on Saturday, he sealed not only a crucial victory for his side but also a significant personal milestone.
The boundary took Breakwell to 32 for the match, but also to 997 runs for the season. This is the most runs recorded by a single batter in a single season for Maghull since PlayCricket started tracking statistics back in 1999.
Breakwell has amassed his runs at an average of 76.69, with six 50s and three centuries at a strike rate of 118.36. He has moved past the previous record of 996, held by John Ring after the 2019 season, where Ringo averaged 46.95 with seven 50s and a ton.
All told, there have been seven instances of a batter making at least 900 runs (league and cup) in a season for Maghull. Ring owns an incredible four of these campaigns, eclipsing the mark in 2011, 2018, 2019 and 2022. Kiran Powar made 935 at an average of 55 in 2005, while another former 1st XI captain and team mate of Ring’s, Niall McDonnell, hit 941 at 55.35 in 2008.
We look forward to Jamie’s next three runs, giving him an incredible 1000 for the year, but are safe in the knowledge that he’d happily go runless for the rest of the campaign if it meant the 2nd XI secured a double of promotion AND triumph in the Tittershill Shield.
