No silverware in 40-over competition this season
The 1st XI were knocked out of the Ray Tyler Cup on Sunday, losing at home to Hightown in the quarter-finals.
The visitors were asked to bat first, a decision that seemed justified initially. Hightown saw half their side dismissed with only 83 runs on the board. They limped to 106-7, but lower-order resistance saw them eventually dismissed for 189. Hightown skipper Matt White top scored with 50. Maghull opening bowlers Zack Benton and Anthony Molloy took three wickets each. Molloy added to the three he claimed in Saturday’s match against Highfield. There was also 2-31 from Craig Black.
Maghull were slow out of the blocks in their reply, falling to 86-7. Josh Byrne (12), Harry Beddard (29), and Black (13) offered some resistance, but none went on to the big score that would have stabilised the chase. When Paul McKenna fell, the scoreboard read 124-8. Macauley Lawrenson was the ninth man out, departing for 50 to leave the home side 142-9. This was Macauley’s first half-century of the season. The last man out was Benton, smartly caught by Shadab Khan off his own bowling for 12. Maghull finished 36 runs short of their victory target.
Maghull still have a chance to earn some silverware this season. They face Newton-le-Willows in the Liverpool Echo Knockout at Hall Lane on Thursday. But they will have to be at their very best to pull off the upset against the current Premier Division leaders.
