The 1st XI’s two game winning streak came to a crashing end on Saturday, as they were crushed by the small matter of 179 runs away at Spring View.
After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Spring View skipper Lewis Matthews saw his side rack up 225-7 before declaring after 49.3 overs. Spin bowlers Cam Lawrenson and stand in skipper Joe Campbell took two wickets each, while John Ring and Craig Black picked up one each. It was Ring’s first wicket since 2022.
In reply, Maghull crashed to 46 all out after a mere 20.3 overs. Lawrenson top scored with 21 from 24 balls, but Ring’s 14 was the only other score over six in an innings containing five ducks.
Maghull have slipped back to 11th, 21 points ahead of bottom placed Old Xaverians, and welcome 7th place Sutton next Saturday.
The 2nd XI remain unbeaten in the league but were held to their first home draw of the season against Fleetwood Hesketh. The visitors batted first and made 278-7d from 45 overs. James Stanley took 4-52 from his 13 overs. In reply, Maghull managed 239-7 from 44 overs, with the prolific Jamie Breakwell leading the way with 75 from 63 balls. Adam Lloyd made a run-a-ball 33, Shaun Hornby 29 and Declan Devine 28 from 28.
Maghull stay in second place, 23 points behind leaders Rainhill (with a game in hand) and 42 ahead of third placed Sutton. A trip to the seaside beckons next week, as Maghull travel to bottom of the table Prestatyn, while Rainhill make the short trip to Prescot & Odyssey.
There is no 4th XI game this Sunday, but they are in friendly action on Monday with the Ormskirk Occasionals visiting Hall Lane.
