The 1st, 3rd, and 4th XIs were all in action this past weekend.
1st XI See Off Hightown
The 1st XI got their first league victory of the season on Saturday, beating Hightown St Mary’s by 49 runs at Hall Lane thanks to half-centuries from Jon Ring and Josh Byrne and four wickets from Zack Benton.
Batting first, Maghull made 233-9 from 52.3 overs. Opening batter Ring hit 90, his third 50 of the season and second in two games after his 85 against Wavertree in the T20 match earlier in the week. Batting at three, Bryne’s 62 was his second 50 of the campaign. Cam Lawrenson chipped in with 31 from his batting spot of 6.
Taking to the field to defend their total, Maghull’s opening bowlers set the tone. Benton claimed 4-73 and Craig Black 3-36, as the visitors could only muster 184. They were bowled out inside the 41st over of their reply. Lawrenson, Declan Devine, and Joe Campbell took a wicket each.
The victory takes the 1sts up to 6th in the LDCC 1st Division. They’ll look to build on the result next week when they travel to Sefton Park.
3rd XI Lose High Scoring Clash at Sefton Park
The 3rd XI had the rough end of a high-scoring clash with Sefton Park on Saturday. They lost by four wickets in a game of 473 combined runs. Asked to bat first, Maghull made 236-6 from 39 overs. Jamie Regan-Hammond continued his fine start to the season with 71. Frank Byron made 42 and Dan Clifford 40, while Ben Sedman finished 29 not out. But Sefton Park were able to overhaul Maghull’s total for the loss of six batters. Byron claimed five wickets for Maghull.
The 3rd XI is still looking for their first win of the season. They will hope to claim that particular scalp on Saturday with Caldy the visitors to the Old Hospital Ground.
Youngsters Shine as 4th XI Share the Spoils at Sefton Park
The 4th XI picked up a draw against Sefton Park on Sunday, with the side’s youngsters to the fore with ball and bat. The home side batted first and amassed 181-8 from 45 overs. Maghull’s opening bowlers, Tadhg Bell and Owen Quilliam, took two wickets each. Bell’s second coming thanks to the safe hands of Joseph Byrne on his senior debut. In reply, Maghull finished on 146-8 from 44 overs, with Rowan Badger top scoring with 80 from 114 balls. This was Badger’s first senior half-century. He was supported by Byrne, who provided valuable support in an eighth-wicket stand of 43.
Next up for the 4s is a home game against Ormskirk on Saturday at Hall Lane.
