For the second season in a row, Maghull 2nd XI fell one step short of picking up the Tittershill Cup, as they lost the final at home to Wavertree on Sunday.
Wavertree were invited to bat first by Jamie Breakwell, Maghull’s captain, and at 65-4 the 1st division leaders looked to be in a spot of bother. Their middle order, led by 76 from Fraser Farrell, was able to rally and rebuild, posting an eventual total of 210. Shaun Hornby took 3-39 for Maghull, and the wily Declan Devine took 3-8 from his 3.1 overs.
Maghull’s run chase never really got going, with no real partnerships developed as they fell to 104 all out inside 30 overs. Rich Brown (18) and Hornby (13) were the only batters to reach double figures as four of Wavertree’s bowlers went at under four an over. Farrell added to his batting efforts with 2-16 while Niket Mehta took 3-19 from his five overs.
The 2nd XIs focus now shifts firmly back to league matters, as they sit six points behind league leaders Rainhill and look to make an instant return to Division One after relegation in 2024.
