All four teams produced a worthy winner this past week.
In a week of outstanding individual performances, the Player of the Week award has been split four ways, with a player from all four senior sides being recognised. Maghull Director of Cricket Paul McKenna was delighted to have the chance to call out a player from each side, and it’s a testament to the great efforts put in by players on all teams over the weekend.
1st XI
For the 1st XI, Greg Coogan took the honours after picking up 5-42 in his side’s 51-run win over Highfield. This was Greg’s second POTW award this season, after he won the award two weeks ago following a 7-34 outing against Northop Hall.
2nd XI
It was another repeat winner for the 2nd XI, with Paul Houghton gaining his second nod of the season. Paul struck 35 from 41 balls in his side’s 152 and then picked up 4-17 to restrict Southport Trinity to 152-9. Paul previously won the POTW in May, after he hit 54* and took 2-4 against Old Xaverians.
3rd XI
The first 3rd XI player to scoop a POTW nod in 2026 is Gareth Barry, who enjoyed a great outing for the 3rds on Saturday. The wily veteran took 3-25 from 11 overs as the 3rds bowled Birkenhead Park out for 98. Gaz then took to the run chase with gusto, smoking 60 in quick time. This tied a career-best mark and secured an eight-wicket win for the 3rds.
4th XI
It was another all-round effort that earned the accolade from the 4th XI. Dan Denholm struck an aggressive 48* in the 4th XI’s 145 all out. He followed this up with 4-12 as the team dismissed P&O for 76.
Club Secretary Neil Dutton said, “It was a fantastic weekend for the club, with so many excellent individual performances key parts of great team displays. It’s great that these four guys get their laurels for their efforts.”
