Our centenary season produced plenty of memorable performances, and now it’s time to recognise the players who made their mark. Here’s a look at Maghull Cricket Club’s individual award winners from 2026.
1st XI
Greg Coogan took home the award for Player of the Year, as voted for by the 1st XI squad. In his fourth season at Maghull, Greg took 44 wickets at an average of 15.64, claiming a wicket every 31.6 deliveries. He took five or more wickets in an innings three times, including a season-best 7-34 against Northop Hall.
Overseas player Zack Benton was named Captain’s Player of the Year by 1st XI skipper Macauley Lawrenson. In his first season with Maghull, Zack led the club’s wicket-taking charts with 49 wickets at 18.3 apiece and a strike rate of 26.76. He also claimed 5-50 against Sutton (St Helens).
2nd XI
The 2nd XI players voted for captain Liam Gibbons as their Player of the Year. Liam took over as captain after Joe Cunningham was lost for the season with a hand injury. He responded with a career-high 450 runs at an average of 32.2, including two 50s and a century. Liam set a new career mark with 111* against Ainsdale. In addition, he chipped in with 21 wickets, including a career-high 8-48 against New Brighton.
Opening bowler Rowan Badger received the nod as Liam’s Captain’s Player of the Year. Rowan led the team with 28 wickets at 26.29, striking every 32.07 deliveries. His best performance came against Highfield, when he claimed 4-44.
3rd XI
The 3rd XI Player’s Player of the Year was the ageless Gaz Barry. Gaz took 16 wickets in 2026, his highest tally since 2021, with a best of 3-13 against Birkenhead Park in the season finale. He also bludgeoned 143 runs, his most since 2013, including a high score of 60 against Park in July. That score tied his career-best.
Meanwhile, Gareth Lloyd named Chris Mawdsley as his Captain’s Player of the Year. Chris took 14 wickets at an average of 25.9, an economy rate of 2.87 and a strike rate of 54.1. His best outing came against Northop Hall in August, when he took 3-25. Since 2021, only Gaz Barry (75) and Dave Blackburn (84) have taken more wickets for the 3rd XI than Chris, who has bagged 70 scalps at 20.6 in that span.
4th XI
Owen Quilliam was named 4th XI Players’ Player of the Year. In his first full season playing senior cricket, Owen scored 145 runs at an average of 14.5, including his first senior half-century against Rainford. He also claimed 10 wickets at 25.7, with a best of 2-10. To cap his season, Owen took the winning wicket in back-to-back games against Winstanley Park and Haydock. He also claimed two catches.
Neil Dutton named Harrison Willis as his Captain’s Player of the Year. Harrison took a career-high nine wickets in 2026, with a best of 2-44 along the way. However, his attitude, application and dedication to fielding earned him the award from his captain. Harrison has come a long way and, with plenty more cricket ahead of him, still has much he can achieve.
Ladies Section
It was quite a season for the ladies section as they won the Softball Super 8s Second Division title. The players named Millie Keegan as their Player of the Year, while Deb Bowden selected Savanna Rae as her Captain’s Player of the Year. A junior player, Savanna is a much-appreciated and much-loved member of the squad.
Everyone at Maghull Cricket Club is looking forward to welcoming Sav back onto the field.
Outstanding Achievement Awards
Jon Ring received an outstanding achievement award after becoming just the fourth player in club history to hit 10,000 runs. Jon has amassed 10,416 runs at 32.15, with 62 50s and 11 centuries.
Tadhg Bell also received an Outstanding Achievement Award after making club history in June. At just 13 years old, Tadhg became the youngest player to score a senior century for Maghull since joining the Liverpool District Cricket Competition. Tadhg hit 100* against Winstanley Park
The John Miller Award for Junior Volunteer of the Year
The John Miller Award, presented to the junior member of the club who has made the greatest contribution as a volunteer throughout the season, was won by Zoe Dutton.
Zoe played an instrumental role in the growth and development of the all-girls Dynamos section throughout 2026, working alongside lead activator Karen Forrest. Her hard work and dedication have made a significant contribution to the section’s success and are greatly appreciated by everyone at Maghull Cricket.
Zoe is a thoroughly deserving winner of the John Miller Award.
