Maghull Match Report, August 22nd/23rd

A look back on another weekend of action for Maghull’s senior sides.

Third Straight Loss for the 1st XI

The 1st XI fell to a third consecutive defeat on Saturday, going down by three wickets to New Brighton at Rake Lane.

Maghull batted first after Macauley Lawrenson lost the toss. His side were going along steadily on 86-2 with Jon Ring on 41. But after he fell to Ali, Maghull lost their last seven wickets for just 19 runs. Matt Bean (13) and Josh Byrne (10) were the only other Maghull batters to reach double figures as the side collapsed to 105 all out.

Jon Ring scored 41 out of the 1st XI’s 105.

The home side endured a wobble of their own in reply. From 53-2, they slumped to 71-6. But Ali, with the support of Horrocks, got New Brighton to 103 before Jones fell to Ring with just three runs to get. Ali finished unbeaten on 41 from 103 deliveries. Greg Coogan took 2-30, and there were wickets for Zack Benton, Joe Campbell and Cam Lawrenson.

Maghull are down to eighth in the First Division, but need just another four points to stave off the threat of relegation for another year. They’ll look to end the losing run next week with a home game against Sefton Park.

2nd XI Draw against New Brighton

The 2nd XI drew at home against New Brighton. They batted first after losing the toss and made 179-9 from 50 overs. Jamie Breakwell top-scored with 56 from 45 balls, Phil Ivens scored 28, and Tadhg Bell finished unbeaten on 24. New Brighton finished eight down with 132 runs on the board. Paul Houghton bowled a superb 12-over spell, picking up 5-33. Maghull picked up eight points for their afternoon’s work.

Jamie Breakwell recorded his fourth score of 50+ in 2026 against New Brighton

This result, and results elsewhere in the First Division, see Maghull move back out of the relegation zone. They are two points ahead of Spring View, who lost at home to Liverpool on Saturday. Maghull will travel to Aigburth to take on Liverpool themselves next week.

3rd XI Keep on Rolling with Successful Run Chase

The 3rd XI recorded their fifth win in a row on Saturday after a superb run chase away at Caldy. The home side batted first and made 205-3 from 42 overs. Karthik Banothu picked up 2-20 from his 10 overs. Maghull overhauled the total inside 35 overs. John Comer (58) and Lewis Wells (35) posted 109 runs for the first wicket. Maghull found themselves 132-3 after the openers, and Adam Lloyd fell. They needed to rebuild, and that’s exactly what they did. Mohan Banoth, last week’s Player of the Week (44* from 25 balls) and Nadim Wahid (36* from 34 balls) shared an unbroken 77-run stand to clinch victory for Gareth Lloyd’s side.

The 3rds are third in the First Division. They trail second-place Sefton Park by 0.52 points per game. They’ll look to keep the good times coming next week with their second meeting with Northop Hall in the last three weeks.

4th XI Win a Close One at Bootle

The 4th XI held on to beat Bootle 5th XI by 26 runs at Wadham Road on Sunday. Captain Neil Dutton top-scored with 58, Lewis McDonald made 45, and James Forrest chipped in with 21 as Maghull were bowled out for 179 after 34.2 overs. Bootle looked in command with the score at 128-4. But Bill Powell took 4-16 from 5.2 overs as the home side lost their last six wickets for 25 runs and were dismissed for 153. James Forrest took 2-16, and there were wickets for Joseph Byrne and Deb Bowden.

Neil Dutton scored his fourth half-century in his last four Sunday games against Bootle.
