Maghull Match Report, July 4th

A look back on an eventful Saturday for Maghull CC

Greg Coogan bowled the 1st XI to their third win in four games on Saturday, as his side beat Northop Hall by 48 runs.

Ring and the Lower Order Set a Target

Maghull batted first after losing the toss. The top order found it difficult to establish any partnerships of note. When Jon Ring was the sixth wicket to fall, he had 42 of Maghull’s total of 62. Joe Campbell, Anthony Molloy, Cam Lawrenson and Macauley Lawrenson all fell cheaply. The Lawrenson brothers were unable to muster a run between them. Josh Byrne managed 13. But the lower order counterattacked with several vital contributions along the way. Craig Black hit 22 off 41 balls. Greg Coogan chipped in with 16 and Paul McKenna 10. The last man to fall, Matt Bean, contributed a gritty 30 from 67. All told, Maghull were bowled out for 142 after 55 overs.

Coogan the Destroyer

The home side did not find batting conditions to their liking. They were shot out for 94 in 33.3 overs. Coogan struck first, dismissing opener Jac Kennedy for a duck. Zack Benton then removed Hall’s number three and four batters for seven and four respectively, leaving Hall 33-3. This soon became 44-4 when Coogan had Finley Jenkins caught behind by McKenna for 8. When Andrew Watkin was dismissed for 27, lbw to Coogan, Northop were 47-5 and in big trouble. The sixth wicket fell at the same score, with Coogan dismissing James Hurlin for zero. The next wicket fell on 64, with Carwyn Johnson falling victim to Coogan for 15. Captain Ben Slater was caught by McKenna off the bowling of Coogan for 20. Northop were 84-8. Cam Lawrenson came in to dismiss Gethin Owens to leave Northop nine down and still 49 runs behind. Then, fittingly, the final wicket went to Coogan, who had Paul Jenkins caught by Joe Campbell without scoring. Coogan finished the day with seven wickets for 34 runs from 16.3 overs.

The victory sees Maghull into eighth place in the first division. They are just three points behind New Brighton in seventh. Next up for Maghull is a trip to 10th-place Spring View, who have lost their last two league games.

Breakwell Ton Not Enough for 2nd XI

The 2nd XI lost by five wickets to Bootle at Hall Lane. The visitors dismissed Maghull for 190. Former captain Jamie Breakwell hit 106. The innings contained 14 fours and six sixes. Phil Ivens’ 26 was the second-highest score.

Breakwell’s century was his sixth for the 2nd XI and his first in 2026

The visitors were 160-5 at one stage, with Rowan Badger claiming three wickets. But an unbroken sixth-wicket stand saw Bootle to victory. The loss leaves the 2nd XI ninth in the first division, 12 points ahead of Spring View. The two sides meet at Hall Lan this Saturday.

Blackburn Spins a Web in 3rd XI Win

The 3rd XI won a close one away at Northop Hall on Saturday, beating the Welshmen by 19 runs at Shotton CC. Gareth Lloyd’s side batted first and made 178-9 from 45 overs. Adam Lloyd top scored with a typically aggressive 53, with six fours and three sixes. Owen Bromilow made 32, and Dan Denholm chipped in with 27. Maghull then bowled Hall out for 159 in their reply. Dave Blackburn took out half the side, finishing with 5-33. Tadhg Bell claimed two wickets, while there was a scalp each for Bromilow and Chris Mawdesley. A trip to table toppers Wavertree is next on the slate for the 3rds.
