It was a mostly wet weekend for the Maghull sides, but there was some action on the fields.
Rain Forces Abandonment at Sefton Park
Only 11 overs of play were possible in South Liverpool, with the 1st XI seeing their clash with Sefton Park abandoned as a draw. The hosts, inserted by Maghull captain Macauley Lawrenson, were 49-0 when the conditions became truly unplayable. The result leaves Lawrenson’s side 6th in the league. The 1st XI’s next outing will be on Thursday night, when they welcome Haydock to Hall Lane in the Liverpool Echo Knock Out Cup. Then league matters resume on Saturday, with third-placed New Brighton the visitors to Maghull.
Weather the Winner in 2nd XI Clash With Liverpool
The rain on Saturday had the final say at Hall Lane. The 2nd XI’s game against Liverpool was abandoned after a mere three overs. Maghull were 12-0 at the time, with Johnny Hennessey and Josh Brady unbeaten on six and four respectively. Maghull currently sit in 10th spot in the league, but have played a game less than most of their immediate competition. Joe Cunningham’s side’s focus will turn to Chrysalis Cup action against Old Xaverians on Tuesday night. Then a trip across the Mersey next Saturday with a game against New Brighton, who currently reside in 11th spot.
Washout at Moss Side for 3rd XI
The 3rd XI also saw the weather come out on top on Saturday. Their match against Caldy at Moss Side lasted 11 overs before the rain became too much. The visitors were 25-0 at the abandonment, with Gareth Barry posting economical figures of 6-3-3-0. The 3rd XI remain 8th in the league after the weekend. A trip to Aigburth for a clash with Liverpool CC is next on the cards for Gareth Lloyd’s charges.
4th XI Show Spirit but Lose to Ormskirk
The weather did not stop the 4th XI on Sunday, but they were unable to take advantage of mostly sunny skies against Ormskirk at Hall Lane. Asked to bat first, Maghull were shot out for 128 inside 30 overs. Phil Ivens top scored with 40, with captain Neil Dutton (31) and Rowan Badger (25) also chipping in. Ormskirk reached their target in the 29th over of their reply, but only after a furious fightback from the home side led by young spinner Joseph Byrne. In just his second senior game, Byrne took 3-36 as Ormskirk went from 98-2 to 122-6.
